Big Money Transfer News of 2009 Summer

 

Real Madrid, Man City, Lyon and Juventus are the biggest buyers in the transfer market so far this summer. (All figures shown are in pounds)

Real Madrid

Real Madrid grabs all the headlines when it broke two world records for the transfer fee in matter of weeks. It has spent more than 200m this summer, which includes Cristiano Ronaldo (80m), Kaka (59m) and Karim Benzema (30m). The Spanish giant also surprises everyone after they reinforce the squad with two defenders in the 12.8m-rated Raul Albiol and Alvaro Arbeloa (3.5m).

With the capture of Xabi Alonso for 30m, Real Madrid declares the squad is completed and the spending is over for the summer.

 

Man City

Man City's cash seems unlimited but they have some difficulties in attracting top players. Nevertheless they managed to capture the signature of a frustrated Carlos Tevez and Emmanuel Adebayor, both at 25m each. Earlier they have already spent 30m on Gareth Barry (12m) and Roque Santa Cruz (18m). They have also reinforced their defense with 16m-rated Kolo Toure from Arsenal and 22m-rated Joleon Lescott from Everton.

 

Lyon

Lyon, trying to regain their past domination of the French Ligue, has spent 20.7m and 12.8m on strikers Lisandro Lopez and Bafetimbi Gomis respectively, 15.5m on left winger Michel Bastos and 12.9m on left back Aly Cissokho.

 

Barcelona

After investing 4.3m on leftback Maxwell and another 13.7m on new Brazilian wonderkid Keirrison, Barcelona surprises everyone by forking out 43m cash plus Samuel Eto'o for Inter's Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Towards the end of the transfer window, Barcelona splashes another 24m on highly rated young defender Dmytro Chygrynskiy from Shakhtar Donetsk.

 

Juventus

Italian Serie A has been hit by the global recession badly, but that does not stop Juventus from splashing 22m and 18m for Brazilians Diego and Felipe Melo respectively to form a deadly midfield combination.
