Penalty Kick

About Penalty Kick

Like Cho daiD, this game is also very popular in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia. It’s a fairly easy game that depends mainly on luck and not skills. Usually this game is played by 4 to 8 players, and each round takes a short time to complete.

How to Play

In this game, there are only players and no bankers. But one of the players has to deal the cards.

Each player will contribute a base stake into the “Pool” (the base stake is determined before the game starts).

After the Pool is formed, the dealer gives out the cards in a counter-clockwise direction. The first player will then receive 2 open cards.

Upon receiving the cards, the player can choose to bet or fold.

The next player will be given a new set of 2 open cards, and so on.

When the Pool is used up at any point of time, the game is reset and the players have to chip in the base stake again.

Bet or Fold

Each player has these 2 choices: Bet or Fold.

If he bets, he must also announce how much he is going to bet. The amount can be anything from the minimum (the base stake) to the maximum (whatever there is in the Pool). If he wins, he will take the amount that he bet from the Pool, ie if he shows hand and wins, the whole Pool will be his and the game is restarted.

However, if he bets and loses, he will need to pay the penalty.

Winnings

The best combination with the highest chance of winning is Ace and King. In this case, the player will win if his 3rd card is anything from 2 to Queen. Normally most players will show hand.

In the example below, the player gets 3 and Q, and the third card he gets is 6, which is between 3 and Q, so he wins whatever amount he bets.

Of cos the chances of winning is lower when the range is smaller. Thus the bet should be considerably smaller too. Most players will skip (fold) if the range they are getting is less than 5 cards.

If the player gets a consecutive number (eg 7 & 8 or 10 & Jack), the dealer can automatically fold his cards as it is impossible to bet.

Penalty

If the player bets and does not get the 3rd card inside the range (as shown in the picture below), he will need to pay the amount that he bets into the Pool. In this case, the Pool will grow.

In the example below, the player gets a 2 and J, but the third card he receives is K, which is beyond J, so he will lose whatever he bets, ie contribute his bet amount into the Pool.

If the player’s 3rd card is the same as the 1st or 2nd card, he will need to pay double the amount he bets. This is called hitting the goalpost.

In the example below, the player gets an A and K, but the third card is also A, which is the same as the first card. He will then need to pay the penalty.

In cases where the player receives same number as 1st and 2nd cards (eg 6 & 6 or Queen & Queen), his cards will be folded automatically. But some players do insist that this is a penalty and anyone who receives this will pay a certain amount to the Pool. This rule should be agreed before the game starts.
